August Found Poem - Month Switch

How to Find a Friend
This list poem is a simple instruction manual on how to find a quality friend. Although there are not many poetic devices used throughout the poem, repetition is certainly one of its main elements. I decided to switch the friendship poems with the lullabies, which were originally intended to be the August poems, because August contains International Friendship Day, which, to me, seemed to important to not acknowledge!
Say please.
Say thank you.
Don’t expect too much.
Don’t perceive too little.
Play games with cards, not with minds.
Crush insults, not ideas.
Carry each other, not old grudges.
Work as a team, not as competitors.
Open your mind.
Open your eyes.
See beauty in the details.
Appreciate everyone for who they are.
Don’t expect perfection.
Learn to cook.
Learn to eat.
Lean to laugh.
Learn to love.
Learn to take a compliment.
Learn to cherish confidence.
Learn the value of compassion.

And smile more.

  1. Rachel, you could not have summed it up better! I feel like this fits into your theme, as you said, because of international friendship day. This poem is a simple guide to finding a friend, and after reading it, it seems like a tough list to fulfill. I really enjoyed repetition of some words such as "learn," "don't," and "open." The punctuation adds great abruptions which makes the poem feel very much like a list. Great job Rachel!
