Losing Your Attention
This free verse poem depicts the frustrations of someone trying to carry out a conversation with a friend who is constantly not listening to them. As the poem goes on, the narrator gets more and more frustrated and finally gives up completely. This poem is written in a very abstract for as underlining is used to represent dialogue or though and bold is used to represent words that should be stressed. The choppy way that this poem was written is meant to represent the emphasis on certain words, as well as to represent the unevenness of the frustrated narrator’s thoughts. Therefore, the poem has rhythm, but the rhythm is meant to be read almost exactly as it appears on the page.
Although some repetition is used, there are virtually no poetic devices used in this poem.
So how was your...
But the final word never
escapes
my lips
Why?
Because you’re
staring
at
A Tree.
And I’m left thinking
Wow
am I really that
Boring?
I mean
I’ve got to
wonder
Right?
I mean
isn’t the
Inability
to
Hold
your
Attention
for more than
Two
minutes a little bit...
Do you see that?
You’re pointing
I’m rolling my eyes
The tree?
No, it’s
More
then a tree!
Idiot.
Then, tell me, what exactly is...
But the final word never
escapes
my lips
Why?
Because you’re
staring
at
well
Who cares.
And I’ve
lost
Your
Attention
again.
